Crossing the Rs 20 lakh salary mark can feel like a major achievement. Years of hard work have finally translated into a higher income and, hopefully, a little more financial freedom.
But it's also the point where many people fall into an expensive trap.
The extra money slowly disappears into a bigger home, a more expensive car, frequent holidays and everyday lifestyle upgrades. A year later, despite earning much more than before, they're saving very little more than they used to.
A higher income doesn't automatically improve your finances. What you do after the salary hike matters just as much.
One of the first things worth doing is increasing your investments.
If you've been investing the same amount for years while your salary has steadily grown, your savings rate has probably fallen without you noticing. A simple way to avoid that is to increase your SIPs or other long-term investments every time your income goes up. If the money is invested before you get used to spending it, you're much less likely to miss it.
It's also a good time to revisit your tax planning.
Once your income crosses certain levels, the tax you pay becomes a much bigger part of your overall financial picture. That doesn't mean buying financial products just to save tax. Instead, review whether you're using the deductions and exemptions available to you, and whether the tax regime you've chosen still makes sense for your current income and investments.
Your insurance deserves another look too.
When your salary was lower, a modest life insurance policy may have been enough. Today, your family may depend on a much larger income, you may have a home loan or children, and your financial responsibilities may have changed significantly. The same applies to health insurance. Medical costs have risen steadily over the years, and a policy that once looked generous may no longer provide the same level of protection.
Another habit worth developing is avoiding lifestyle inflation.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying the rewards of a higher income. The problem arises when every salary hike immediately turns into higher monthly expenses. The more your fixed expenses increase, the harder it becomes to save, invest or deal with unexpected situations later.
Many people also reach this income level without reviewing their long-term goals.
Perhaps buying a home now feels more realistic. Maybe you can retire earlier than you originally planned or build a larger education fund for your children. A higher salary is a good reason to revisit your financial goals instead of simply carrying forward the plan you made five or ten years ago.
Finally, don't let larger bank balances sit idle for too long.
It's common to accumulate more cash in a savings account once income rises. It is important to maintain an amount of money sufficient for any emergency situation, but having excess money which may not be required in the immediate future can even be put into investment as per one’s objectives rather than being subjected to inflation over time.
Money allows more freedom in terms of how you choose to spend it. Earning more allows you to grow financially, as long as you manage your additional income properly. An earning of Rs 20 lakh or more does not only mean an increase in your pay package; it also means that you need to reassess your financial situation and plan accordingly.
