An Indian-origin woman based in the United States has sparked a massive debate after explaining why many Indians who move abroad, especially to America, often do not return to India even after years of working there.
In a video circulating widely on social media, the woman, Sonali addressed a question she says many people ask: why do Indians who settle in America choose to stay there permanently even after earning what appears to be a significant amount of money?
According to her, many people remain abroad because of the quality of life they experience there. She said cleaner air, better food and water quality, disciplined public behaviour, and a more peaceful lifestyle make it difficult for many to return.
She also pointed out that earning Rs 5-6 crore abroad is not as easy as many people in India imagine. According to her, it takes years of hard work, patience, and consistent effort to reach that level of financial stability.
The woman further explained that once people get used to a calm, organised, and convenient lifestyle, adjusting again to the fast-paced and hectic life in India can feel difficult.
Her remarks quickly triggered a debate online, with social media users sharing mixed reactions.
One user wrote, “People sitting in India think that there is a lot of money abroad but when they go there they realize it but some people do not understand.”
Another commented, “Balanced & Mature Every place has its pros and cons. America may offer comfort and convenience, but India gives a sense of belonging, family, and roots that no country can replace. In the end, it’s about what matters more to you.”
A third user said, “If a person is getting all this then this is called a good life, that is why people have started going there because we never try to make our country so good.”
Some users, however, disagreed strongly with the woman’s point of view.
“Tujhe Ghar ki yaad nahi aayi Sonali? The point is whether you miss your home, parents and friends. After all life is limited even if you have a clear air, comfortable lifestyle, better food/water. The most stupid thinking these NRIs have ‘ki India me saab kharab hai'” a user said.
Another user wrote, “5-6 cr and then expenses?? We are not dumb everybody knows purchasing power parity is th highest in India ( only if you have high income like 20+lac)
Savings make the difference and how you wanna live makes it(including you want gatherings festivals etc…)”
One comment also read, “It’s be peaceful if we had good neighbours and a fckng ocean to either sides of us.”
Another added, “Most don’t save or make 6 crore even after being abroad for 20-30 years. It’s a myth.”
