A shocking incident took place in Shantou, Guangdong province, on Friday morning when a woman threw a large amount of money from a high-rise building. According to The Standard, the act created chaos as people gathered and rushed to pick up the money.
Around 9 am, a woman at the Star Lake City residential complex in Longhu District was captured tearing handfuls of Hong Kong $1,000 (around Rs 1.5 crore) banknotes from her balcony.
According to the reports, the incident was believed to be related to a domestic dispute between a husband and wife, during which the woman tossed the cash outside.
Officials stepped in
People at the scene said police and firefighters arrived after the incident. Local media later checked and confirmed the details with the Star Lake City property office.
The management office stated that the notes were genuine, and some residents who collected the cash have already returned it.
The property management also urged those who collected any money to return it to the office or local police station.
Inquiry launched
Officials from the Zhuchi Police Station of the Longhu District Public Security Bureau said that the matter has been dealt with and a probe is underway. They asked the police to return any cash they might have collected.
Officials from the local street office said a formal announcement will be made shortly.
